May 18 - Nov 02, 2025
Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck
Location: Remagen-Rolandseck
In around 60 works, the exhibition presents the fascinating epoch of the same name from its beginnings around 1770 to the Neo-Romantic period around 1900. In the chapters ‘Romantic Love’, ‘Dream and Nightmare’ and ‘Back to Nature’, the longings, ideals and utopias of this period are made tangible.
Masterpieces by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Spitzweg, Friedrich Nerly and Karl Friedrich Schinkel illustrate the longing for a soul mate, for a unity of man and nature. In addition to hope and fantastic realities, they also show the abysses of the subconscious in dreams and nightmares. Romantic thinking still characterises our society today. The thematised hope of retreat and healing is actualised by the perceived excessive demands of a rapidly changing, conflict-ridden world. The Arp Museum, deeply rooted in Rhine Romanticism, provides the perfect setting for these discoveries. The exhibition opens onto the Skulpturenufer, a path with 15 works of art along the ‘romantic Rhine’, which can be experienced as a backdrop for hopeful utopias and fairytale perspectives on the past.
