Have you ever heard of the notorious Jewish robber chief Abraham Picard, to whom even Schinderhannes was subordinate? And are you familiar with the Jewish vocational school Masada in Darmstadt, founded in 1947, where young people who had survived the war and concentration camps were prepared for a life in Israel? But the poet Mascha Kaléko is also honored.
For the anthology “Next year in...”, unusual episodes of Jewish life were compiled and translated into comic drawings. These form a panorama of Jewish history in Germany, offering a view of the diversity of Judaism, exclusion and assimilation, persecution, departure and arrival. Without resorting to clichés, the illustrators look at religious rituals, Jewish art and culture, everyday anti-Semitism, persecution, resistance - and last but not least, Jewish humor.
The exhibition will take place in various stores throughout Speyer.
The time of the SchUM Culture Days is a special time in Speyer, as these days are dedicated to a unique and significant cultural history that is deeply rooted in the past and is still alive today.
Speyer is taking part in the Jewish Culture Days together with the cities of Mainz and Worms. With an exciting program, we want to highlight the many facets of Jewish culture in music and theater, shed light on formative historical events, commemorate the victims of anti-Semitism and, of course, celebrate the vitality of the Jewish legacy in our city.
