The Rhine and Moselle flow together at the Deutsches Eck near Koblenz. A monumental equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I was erected here in 1897.
It was intended to commemorate the late Kaiser and the ‘German unification’ he had fought for in three wars. The financial means of no less than 1 million marks were collected through a national fundraising campaign. The young Kaiser Wilhelm II personally chose the location of Koblenz. He was also personally present at the ceremonial inauguration in August 1897.
The monument, including the equestrian statue, is 37 metres high. The monument was badly damaged by an American artillery shell during the war. It was only after German reunification that the monument, donated by Anneliese and Dr Werner Theisen, was rededicated on 3 October 1990.
