With legal effect from 1 January 1998, the State of Hesse transferred ownership of the abbey complex, which had been secularised in 1803, to a foundation under public law with legal capacity.
The constitution of the ‘Eberbach Abbey Foundation’ established in this manner was published in the State Gazette for the State of Hesse on 2 February 1998, p. 347.
The foundation's mission is to preserve the architectural and cultural monument of Eberbach Abbey in the long term through moderate, appropriate and careful use, as well as to preserve its historical winegrowing tradition.
The foundation itself must generate the ongoing funds necessary for the maintenance and operation of the complex in order to fulfil its tasks. This purpose is served by the admission fees and guided tour fees charged to visitors, as well as the rental of premises for events, the lease income from the monastery restaurant and the purchase of products at the monastery shop.
The foundation receives funding from the state to continue the ‘Generalsanierung Kloster Eberbach’ (Eberbach Monastery General Renovation) programme, which has been running since 1986 and aims to repair damage to the building that has accumulated over centuries.
