Konrad Adenauer was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Konrad Adenauer (born on 5 January 1876 in Cologne, died on 19 April 1967) was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
He was Lord Mayor of Cologne from 1917 until he was deposed by the Nazis in 1933.
As President of the Parliamentary Council and as the first Chancellor and Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, he left his mark on the young republic. Adenauer was one of the founders of the CDU and was its party chairman from 1950 to 1966.
When he became Federal Chancellor in 1949, he was already 73 years old. He was in favour of Bonn as the federal capital and stood for a policy of western integration and European unification as well as an active role for the Federal Republic in NATO.
