Nestled in the romantic castle park of Sayn with its ancient giant trees, ponds and streams lies the Butterfly Garden at Sayn Castle. This small exotic paradise, housed in two glass pavilions, was founded in 1987 by Prince Alexander and Princess Gabriela of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn.
Visitors stroll among bananas, hibiscus and other tropical plants, surrounded by thousands of butterflies. Dwarf quails with chicks the size of bumblebees, turtles, colourful tropical finches and the mysterious green iguana are further inhabitants of the Sayn Castle Butterfly Garden.
From March to November, you can experience the fairy tale of a thousand and one butterflies every day in Sayn. We would like to whisk you away to a small tropical wonderland, with palm trees and banana plants, splashing waterfalls and a colourful abundance of exotic butterflies. Here, colourful butterflies from South America, Africa and Asia fly freely among visitors, flitting from flower to flower in search of nectar.
In the butterfly garden at Sayn Castle, discover the approximately 25 cm large Atlas moth from China (photo), which remains almost motionless in its daytime sleep, or the blue Morpho from Brazil, gliding majestically through the air. In a second pavilion, the ‘caterpillar house’, you can find tiny butterfly eggs, voracious caterpillars and cleverly hidden pupae.
