Founded in 1974, the Museum of German Inland Navigation is located in the Ruhrort district of Duisburg, the birthplace of the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports, which today form the largest inland port complex in Europe.

With the purchase of the museum ship ‘Oscar Huber’ in 1974, the ‘Society for the Promotion of the Museum of German Inland Waterways’ achieved its first milestone. In 1979, the first collection was finally moved into the former Ruhrort town hall. Twenty years later, in 1998, as part of the Emscher Park International Building Exhibition (IBA), the collection was moved to the former Ruhrort indoor swimming pool, where the numerous exhibits relating to the technical, economic and social history of inland waterway transport found a home commensurate with the size of the collection.

In the former men's swimming pool, a barge from 1913 can be viewed under full sail. In the former women's swimming pool, a walk-in replica of an inland vessel conveys a direct impression of life and work on board. The exhibition tells of the everyday life of the skippers and their families on water and on land.

Two museum ships are moored right next to the museum, at the Steiger Schifferbörse:

  • Side-wheel steamboat ‘Oscar Huber’
  • Bucket chain dredger ‘Minden’

They are open to visitors from April to September.

The Museum of German Inland Navigation is part of the Industrial Heritage Trail.

All exhibition areas are easily accessible for disabled visitors and wheelchair users.
