Founded in 1860, Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in Germany. Its current appearance is the result of a long development. Around 12,000 animals from more than 700 different species are at home in the zoological garden of the cathedral city.

One of the main attractions today is the elephant park, which opened in 2004 and caused a sensation throughout Europe with the birth of Cologne's first baby elephant, Marlar, in April 2006. In addition to modern animal enclosures such as the elephant park and the rainforest house, which opened in 2000 and were built according to the latest zoological standards, visitors to Cologne Zoo can still visit historic animal houses today. These include the monkey rock and the old elephant house in Moorish style.

The combination of old buildings, some of which date back to the zoo's founding years after 1860, and new buildings gives the zoo its special charm. But that's not the only reason why Cologne Zoo has become a popular destination for young and old alike in its nearly 150-year history. In addition to zoo favorites such as elephants, lions, and other animals, visitors can discover a variety of rare, sometimes endangered species such as the Matschi tree kangaroos or Przewalski's horses. Cologne Zoo is particularly committed to their conservation and breeding. Nature and species conservation is now a central task of Cologne Zoo.

The animal becomes an ambassador for its species, which is threatened in the wild, and its habitats. By raising public awareness of environmental issues and making a direct contribution to nature conservation projects, the zoo plays an important role in promoting sustainable interaction with nature.
